"Shelter in Place - Front Line" is one in a series of paintings that depict various aspects of what the world is dealing with during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an encaustic painting that uses melted wax, pigments and a variety of techniques to express my inspiration. This process uses many layers of wax. The first layers in this series begin with making rubber gloved hand prints using India Ink.
Rhode Island artist Beth Johnston conveys the beautiful balance of light and shadow in her landscape, still life, and figurative paintings. She captures the subtleties of how the time of day, temperature, and the source of light can alter the appearance of an object or landscape. Because of her love of light, many of her works are simple compositions where the focus is on conveying the effects of atmospheric conditions, sunlight or artificial light sources.
